HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM?!?!

The more political ads I see these days, the more I think about Monte Brewster. Remember the move Brewtsers millions? Richard Prior stars as someone who has millions of dollars to waste and has to waste it all in a short period of time. Well, he decided to waste it on political ads for "none of the above" LOL!.
Sure, it's only a movie, but I think the idea rings a little true in the fact that much of the money spent by candidates these days on ads which just slam their opponenets do nothing more than convince people to vote for "none of the above" by not voting at all. It's a little bit like how Ross Perot got all those votes back in the day. He may not have been the choice of the people, but enough people were fed up with the two major parties to give him a decent size chunk of the vote. I, for one, cant wait for election day so these ads will stop, and I do plan to vote (of coure). But, more and more I really do think that people would like to find that third selection on the ballot that states "none of the above". And that to at least some of those people, an empty office is better than either of the two choices they have to fill it.
Should be a very very interesting elcetion this year. Thankfully, it's going to be here soon.

Red face

Greg - I agree, wholeheartedly, with you. I told my husband that I would love to "mute" every political ad but I'm afraid I would wear out the mute button on our remote.
If just once a politician would say what he/she was going to do (even if it was a lie, which it undoubtedly would be) instead of slamming their opponent I MAY consider voting for them.
I will vote but have VERY LITTLE faith in any of the choices.

I think many people would prefer a little more 'I will," "I can" & "I Did" instead of a constant deluge of "He/ She did" & "I Didnt"

More of what they did on the possitive side and what they intend to do and less finger pointing and denial of charges brought against them by their opponent.

Sometimes they seem less worried about how much the public likes them, as long as they like their opponent less.

An election built on possitives?!?!?!
Doesnt seem too likely, but it wouild be a nice change of pace.

Greg and Sluggo-

I agree with you both in theory, but the reality is, negative campaigning works. Bad things stick in our mind longer than do good things (Nixon looking ill while debating w/Kennedy, Dukakis riding in that tank, etc.) Theoretically, if you're asking me to vote for you, it really doesn't matter what your opponent did or did not do, what matters should be what you are going to do if I vote for you. But, to just toot your own horn doesn't generate any heat. Instead, you get up and you either try to scare the voters ("my opponent supported Al-Queda) or else anger them ("my opponent gave millions to big oil").

I particularly love the ads "he accepted millions in campaign contributions, then awarded contracts to them." Um.....yeah, that's sorta how it works. They get you into office, then you whore out to them. I don't particularly like it, but that's pretty much how it goes and I don't see why that's so shocking.

Which is why I favor a balance to government. I don't like to see either party firmly in charge, because that's when the crap really starts. If there is a balance, if both parties have pull, then you only get anything accomplished by compromise. The GOP satisfies their whores, the Dems satisfy theirs, and in theory, that's how the most whores get satisfied (and then, remember, it "trickles down" to the rest of us).

Oh, I get that part of it Lew. I understand fully the idea of "planting the seed of doubt" in the voting publics mind. I just wish it wasnt the only thing that was mentioned in these ads.
It gets old really really fast.

Here's an idea.

If you happen upon a politician in one of this years races ask him or her this...

Ask them to tell you why you should vote for them, but...
Qualify it by mentioning that you dont want to hear anything about why you shouldn't vote for their opponent,

See what kind of response you get LOL!

I dont wanna know why you think I shouldnt vote for them, I wanna know why you think I should vote for you.

Let the games begin
